It’s a great Friday for an NFL news dump. Here are odds for what’s likely to happen.

It’s been a quiet week in the NFL. So something big is bound to happen soon, right?

It’s been a pretty quiet week in the NFL. A few rumor-ish things have bubbled up to the surface — the dance in Washington with Kirk Cousins and Jay Cutler trade talk — purposely leaked tidbits designed to further negotiations in one way or another, but nothing substantial.

What I’m getting at is that we haven’t had a good, old-fashioned Friday news dump in a while and that has me wondering if today’s the day.

The stars and planets have aligned nicely for something. This is the last Friday before the Combine, which starts Feb. 28. Besides the players being there to exercise, a whole lot of negotiations and talks are happening with team reps and agents all in town to do a little business. The Combine ends on March 6, and the so-called tampering window for free agency is the day after that. Finally, free agency opens Thursday, March 9.

So what kind of news dump could we possibly be getting this Friday? Let’s consider a few possibilities.

Someone gets franchise tagged

The window for tagging players opened last Wednesday and runs through March 1, but nobody’s been tagged yet, despite some obvious candidates. It could be that teams and players were trying to balance the books or make an effort to work out long-term contracts before applying the tag.

Odds: 2/10

Big name player(s) get released

Friday’s a good day for bad news because you have the weekend to distract yourself from it. Roster cuts have become a daily thing, but the biggest name to get the boot so far was Mario Williams. Meh. It feels like a good day for cap casualties. However, teams will hold off some of their biggest-name potential cuts while they try to trade them (guys like Tony Romo or Jay Cutler) ahead of March 9.

Odds: 6/10

League hands down player discipline

Roger Goodell hasn’t taken away a draft pick or suspended anyone in months. He’s gotta be getting antsy. Drug testing doesn’t happen until April, so that eliminates a few possibilities.

There’s Michael Floyd, who is currently serving a 24-day sentence for his “extreme DUI” last year. Because the league moves at its own glacial pace for these matters, there’s the possibility of a Jaelen Strong suspension stemming from his marijuana arrest last year.

Odds: 3/10

All right. There are my best educated guesses for a Friday NFL news dump. Place your bets!
