The San Francisco 49ers have been busy this offseason, and new GM John Lynch has noticeably been more vocal with the media than Trent Baalke was. Last week, he spoke with KNBR, where he gave some insight as to what the team will be doing this offseason.
49ers GM John Lynch is open to trading the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft
The new 49ers GM wants what is best for the franchise, no matter what.

After a 2-14 season, the 49ers are set up nicely to choose a franchise player with the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft. Lynch was open to the idea of trading down in the draft, though, if it was what’s best for the team.
“We’ve got a lot of options,” Lynch said via Niners Nation. “We can stay pat right there and find a fabulous player, a game-changing player. It gives us a lot of flexibility to do some other things if we choose to be bold.”
In his latest mock draft, SB Nation’s Dan Kadar has the 49ers selecting North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the No. 2 overall pick. Kadar has said that, “If the 49ers aren’t convinced on one of the top quarterbacks, they should try and move off this pick while staying inside the top 10 to get Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, a safety, or a wide receiver.”
Based on what Lynch told KNBR, making that move isn’t out of the question. “There’s going to be people who covet the pick that we have and there’s going to be some people who want to move up. I think it gives us a lot of options and it gives us a lot of things.”
A trade for the No. 2 pick wouldn’t be unlikely. In fact, it happened just last season when the Eagles traded up, and eventually drafted Carson Wentz.
The 49ers’ quarterback situation is one that doesn’t have one clear answer at the moment. Colin Kaepernick or the 49ers can opt out on his contract anytime between March 2 until March 7. He’s due to earn $14.5 million, and based on the past couple of seasons, won’t be paying him that type of money moving forward.
Lynch met with Kaepernick last Wednesday and said it positive discussion.
“I can tell you,” Lynch said, “we both really very much enjoyed being around Colin and he seems like he’s in a real good place.”
Kaepernick put together a fine season for the 49ers despite their poor record. He took over as the team’s starter over Blaine Gabbert in Week 6. While having him under center didn’t result in many wins, Kaepernick finished the season with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions in 11 starts.
He’s likely not the answer for the 49ers in the long run, but based on Lynch’s interview, he wants to get a full evaluation in of everything going on inside the organization, before making moves.
That may or may not include moving the No. 2 overall pick, but the 49ers have options — and two months to make any decision.
