Patriots use biggest comeback in Super Bowl history to force overtime

The Patriots have come back from down 10 in the Super Bowl in the past, but no team has won after facing a bigger deficit.

For Tom Brady and the Patriots to win Super Bowl LI, they had to defy history first.

No team has won the Super Bowl after trailing by more than 10 points. Nearing halftime, New England found itself down 21-0. That ballooned to 28-3 in the third quarter, so the odds were certainly not in the Patriots’ favor.

And then Tom Brady added another Super Bowl record to his resume.

When New England beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, the Patriots were down 10 in the third quarter before scoring 14 in the final frame to notch the win — and even then it came down to a final goal-line stand.

ESPN gave the Falcons an 86.2 percent chance to win after scoring their second touchdown, but that didn’t necessarily mean much as recent history shows.

Once Atlanta went up by 25 that win probability jumped to 99.7 percent.

History said this one was over. History was wrong.
