Only a day after the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl with a historic 25-point comeback, defensive back Devin McCourty said in a text to TIME that he would not be attending the team’s ceremonial White House visit.
Devin McCourty joins Martellus Bennett in skipping Trump White House Visit
“I don’t feel accepted in the White House.”

”Basic reason for me is I don’t feel accepted in the White House,” McCourty told TIME Monday. “With the president having so many strong opinions and prejudices I believe certain people might feel accepted there while others won’t.
“I can’t imagine a way I go there,” he later added.
McCourty joins teammate Martellus Bennett, who confirmed shortly after the game that he’d follow through on his initial claim that he would not visit a Trump White House in the event of a Super Bowl victory.
The duo were also among a group of players that participated in Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest, raising their fists together ahead of their Week 1 game.
McCourty is the first Patriots player to join Martellus Bennett in his decision to skip the visit, but it would not be surprising to see other players follow suit.
