During Jones’ weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, he said that is one of the challenges with moving on from Romo.
“The team we have, especially the offensive side, was built for Tony,” Jones said, according to the Dallas News. “This is what it is. It’s a juncture we have to address. I don’t know how ultimately we will resolve this and nobody should be alarmed because you don’t have all the answers. There are some issues here that you just have to see how the cards are playing. But we’ll work to this.”
Prescott, a fourth-round pick in 2016, took over at quarterback after Romo suffered a fracture in his back during preseason action against the Seattle Seahawks. He had a stellar season and led the Cowboys to a 13-3 finish and the top playoff seed in the NFC.
He earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after finishing the season with 3,667 passing yards and 23 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Prescott’s poise was evident as he led a furious comeback in divisional play against the Green Bay Packers despite trailing 28-13 heading into the fourth quarter.
Prescott did plenty to secure his role as the Cowboys’ starter going forward, though that does leave Jones in a tough spot with Romo. Jones said, however, that his relationship with Romo will help with the transition.
“The main thing,” Jones said, “is we will work through it. We have a sound enough foundation together that on an individual basis, we will get through this.”
Romo, 36, has spent the bulk of the last two seasons on injured reserve. Still, with several teams around the NFL in need of quality quarterback play, there are bound to be plenty of options should the Cowboys choose to move on from Romo.
Jones just isn’t quite there yet.
