Chris Clemons is on a tear. He’s doing everything he can to get the Campbell Fighting Camels into the madness of the NCAA tournament. After leading Campbell past Presbyterian, 81-62, in the opening round of the Big South tournament, Clemons scored a ridiculous 51 points in the Camels’ quarterfinal upset of No. 2 seed UNC-Asheville.
Big South Tournament 2017: Campbell’s 5’9 Chris Clemons drops 51 points in upset win
Clemons put the Camels on his back for this one.
Clemons straight up went off. His 51 points came on 18-of-32 shooting from the field, including going 8 of 14 from three-point land and 7 of 8 at the free throw line, with the only miss coming late.
Every one of Clemons’ 51 points were needed to topple UNC-Asheville, though. A tight game throughout, it was Clemons that kept the Camels in this one and he put the team on his back in this upset. Clemons broke both the school and Big South scoring record in the game of his life. He also joined Jimmer Fredette as the only players to top 50 points in a conference tournament in the last 20 years, according to ESPN.
Against Presbyterian, the 5’9 Clemons paced the Camels with 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Campbell didn’t face much of a test in that one, as only one member of Presbyterian made their way to double-digit scoring.
Campbell’s next tournament game will come against the winner of the second Big South quarterfinal: No. 6 seed Radford vs. No. 3 seed Liberty. This loss likely knocks Big South co-champs UNC-Asheville out of the running for the Big Dance.
