Kiko Alonso has agreed to a three-year extension with the Miami Dolphins, according to several reports. Worth $28.9 million over four years, with $18.5 million guaranteed, it’s a three-year deal on top of his $3.9 million restricted free agent tender, according to Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. It keeps Alonso in Miami after a bounce-back season.

In his first year with the Dolphins, Alonso doubled his tackle totals from the previous year and caught two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. He became a regular starter in the Dolphins’ front seven, after being a part-time player with the Eagles in 2015.

An Oregon product, Alonso was drafted in the second round, 46th overall, by the Bills in 2013. He thrived in Jim Schwartz’s system as a rookie, emerging as one of the NFL’s most exciting young linebackers. He tore his ACL and missed the entire 2014 season.

Chip Kelly’s Eagles sent LeSean McCoy to Buffalo for Alonso in 2015. The Eagles paid a high price to bring him to Philadelphia, but he was never a fit for the Eagles. Getting dealt to Miami turned out to be a blessing, and he got his career back on track.

The linebacker arrived in Miami after being traded along with Byron Maxwell to the Eagles in a swap of first-round picks last offseason. This was the second time in his four-year career he was traded.

The long-term deal will provide continuity to Alonso. He can now call Miami home for a while.
