Torrey Smith says Colin Kaepernick is better than QBs who have been signed in free agency

Torrey Smith played a couple of seasons with the 49ers and Colin Kaepernick. He recently signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, but Kaepernick hasn’t had the same fortune.

On Wednesday afternoon, Smith spoke out on Twitter about Kaepernick not having been signed yet. He voiced his displeasure with Kaepernick’s lack of a job currently, with 64 quarterbacks in the NFL, some of whom aren’t better than him.

Smith also stood up for Kaepernick when somebody tried to bring up his protest by taking a knee during the national anthem to bring awareness to social injustices towards minorities in the United States. Kaepernick has also made it clear that he will end his protest and stand for the anthem in 2017.

NFL free agency started on March 9. Since then, 18 quarterbacks have been signed to NFL rosters. Some of them, like Connor Shaw, Kellen Clemens, and Aaron Murray, haven’t been regular starters in the NFL.

Kaepernick has shown in the past that he has what it takes to be an NFL starter. He led the team to two NFC Championship games, and one Super Bowl that the 49ers nearly won.

He struggled in more recent years as the team’s roster declined, but still put up decent numbers in 2016. In 11 starts, he completed nearly 60 percent of his passes, threw for 2,241 yards, and 16 touchdowns against just four picks.

Smith’s comments come two days after President Donald Trump talked about Kaepernick at a rally in Louisville. At the rally, Trump said that teams didn’t want to pick Kaepernick up because “they don’t want to get a nasty tweet from Donald Trump.” The day after those comments, Kaepernick continued his donations that he pledged to make in September by donating $50,000 to Meals on Wheels.

There’s still plenty of NFL offseason left for Kaepernick to get signed, but Smith’s argument isn’t outlandish.
