John Elway seemingly pulled the Denver Broncos out of the Tony Romo sweepstakes on Monday afternoon, saying that the team would “stay the course” with Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch.
John Elway deflects Tony Romo interest, says Broncos plan to ‘stay the course’
He says the team is happy with their current quarterbacks.

Sunday, Elway told KUSA’s Mike Klis that Romo had not been discussed since arriving for the NFL owners’ meetings in Phoenix. “We’ve been here all week and his name never came up,’’ Elway said.
That was reiterated on Monday:
The Broncos were considered to be a frontrunner for Romo along with the Houston Texans. Denver struggled throughout the year at the quarterback position, and plugging in the veteran Romo seemed like a great move to complement a defense that ranked fourth in the NFL last season.
Elway didn’t necessarily say that the team wouldn’t go for Romo at all, but if his comments are to be believed then perhaps Romo to Denver won’t happen after all.
His comments come the same day that Jason Garrett told NFL Network’s Steve Wyche that their situation with Romo was, “really unchanged.” Garrett added, “He’s still part of our roster. We haven’t made any roster moves with Tony at this point. So it’s just status quo right now.”
Garrett didn’t appear to be in much of a rush, either. “We’re working through his situation. The players aren’t back for the offseason program yet, so we’re just in a wait-and-see mode about what his status is going to be going forward.”
His stance makes sense, since the team doesn’t net any cap relief by cutting him until June 1 passes.
Nothing should be assumed with Romo until the Cowboys finally make their move. Elway and the Broncos could certainly be holding out for the Cowboys to release Romo, and until then, his stance won’t change.
The only certainty is that this is far from over.
