Given their cap situation and financial commitment to Alex Smith, it looks like the Chiefs are probably stuck watching their incumbent starting quarterback throwing short of the sticks for another year or two. [sad trombone]
Chiefs got their fans’ hopes up again by meeting with Deshaun Watson
Just when Chiefs fans thought there was a way out of dink and dunk purgatory, reality hits.

But maybe not. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson made an interesting revelation Friday afternoon at the NFL Combine when he said that the Chiefs were one of the teams that he has met with in Indianapolis this week.
Watson is almost certain to be a first-round pick, maybe even one of the first 10 players to come off the board. That doesn’t align neatly with the Chiefs picking at No. 27 in the first round.
But, damn, clear your mind of Alex Smith for just a second and just look at some of these throws, like this touchdown pass to Jordan Legget in the National Championship game.
How do you ever go back to watching a guy getting paid $76 million to throw 3-yard hitch routes after you’ve seen that? Sure, Watson does throw a lot of picks, but you’re not moving back to the comfort of short yardage on the family farm once you’ve had a taste of the Hollywood life.
But again, that’s the catch 22 that is Alex Smith ... he’s good enough to get the Chiefs into the playoffs, just far enough to make sure they won’t have a chance to draft someone better.
It’s just like blowing a 28-point lead to the Colts ... the possibility was there until it wasn’t.
