Martellus Bennett’s latest step in his creative journey is a rap EP

Martellus Bennett — the NFL’s most creative player — has taken his talents to the microphone, releasing his rap EP I Am Not A Rapper But Some Of My Friends Are....

Under the name MartysauruxRex (like his Twitter handle), Bennett put together a five-track tape.

We picked out a few highlights from the unique tape.

The title of the first track on the EP is peak Marty B. He’s always let his interest in dinosaurs be known, and well, his rap name is a play on Tyrannosaurus Rex.

But really, he loves dinosaurs:

MartysaurusRex goes in on eating healthy and balling out at Whole Foods, featuring MatchBoxTony. Maintaining a healthy diet and eating the best foods is something that he appears to take rather seriously, considering he made an entire song about it. MartysaurusRex raps about bagging groceries at the farmer’s market. “I’m at Whole Foods and I’m ballin’ hard, though the Dollar Menu still calling’ y’all.”

MatchBoxTony also comes with the heat, “All my patnas organic, real as they come, non-GMO no preservatives added.” He’s also “stacking bread that’s whole grain.”

The track finishes with a sample of Dr. Sebi giving knowledge. It goes beyond just foods that people eat, and talks about a state of health that allows us as people to be comfortable. It’s yet another example of how Marty B is deeper than what you might interpret at face value.

Arguably the best-named song on the EP is “ShaqFu,” a tribute to Shaquille O’Neal’s fighting game from the ’90s. O’Neal was also one of his favorite athletes growing up. I would argue it has the hardest beat on the EP.

Marty B goes in, saying, “When you black and intelligent, it’s hard to be American,” expanding on what he has talked in the past about how he feels about the black experience in America.

He then adds everybody’s “frustrated now that Marty’s getting paid.” He balled out with the Patriots last season, and it turned into a nice new deal with the Packers. It’s not just about getting money though, as he raps about buying stocks and diversifying his portfolio.

He wants people to see him as more than a football player. Sure he’s a great athlete that makes more money than most, but he’s also smart with his money, and has plenty of flexibility, and knowledge of it.

Unsurprisingly, what makes this tape a banger is what makes Marty B interesting: He sticks to his guns and doesn’t try to weigh in about something that may not interest him.

The tape was so good that Bennett’s former teammate Julian Edelman was listening to it and throwing him support on Instagram:

Of course, Marty was down.

It’s his second tape that he’s made in the past few years. The first, titled Year Of The Orange Dinosaur, was released in 2014.

In the description of the tape, Marty B gave us the purpose of it:

“I am not a rapper but some of my friends are..” is exactly what the title says it it is. It was just me and some of my friends hanging out in the studio making music for fun and this is what came out of it. Pretty cool to have so many talented friends and be able to create with them at a high level. I am on a mission to express my creativity in as many ways as possible in 2017, this is a part of my creative journey. Enjoy.
