Tony Romo joins Dallas Mavericks for shootaround in his own No. 9 jersey

Exactly one week after Tony Romo announced his retirement from the NFL, he’s now a professional basketball player. For one day, at least.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is spending Tuesday as a “Maverick for a day” with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks, and that includes a uniform and everything. He came out for a team photo during shootaround in a No. 9 jersey, and then spent much of the session playing with his son.

“I’m pretty sure I can’t go in and play 10 or 15 minutes,” Romo said with a laugh. “I’m pretty sure if I did I’d feel really sore tomorrow. ... It feels like everyone out there is 7-feet tall and they’re all lean. I feel like a turtle out there.”

Romo retired from the NFL to pursue a career in broadcasting with CBS, although there are plenty who believe he may not be entirely done with football. On Tuesday, he admitted that the end of his career didn’t go as he planned.

“As you all know I feel I left something out there that I wanted to accomplish. I have to live with that.”

Romo will spend Tuesday night on the Mavericks’ bench when the team faces the Denver Nuggets at 8:30 p.m. ET, and he won’t see any playing time. But maybe he should. Cowboys tight end Rico Gathers posted a video of a pickup game and Romo has some handles.

Then on Tuesday, Romo posted video of him practicing with the Mavericks and hitting a clean jumper.

Romo’s high school football and basketball coach Steve Berezowitz told USA Today that, while they all knew Romo’s ceiling was higher in football, “everyone thought he was a better basketball player at the time.”

“I can’t say thank you enough,” Romo said Tuesday. “It has been a special week. I’ll probably go 19 for 21 in warmups.”
