Aaron Rodgers is so committed to slimming down that he’s playing less golf

Aaron Rodgers is determined to keep getting better and that means cutting down on anything that’s holding him back. The Green Bay Packers quarterback has decided that he’ll play less golf this offseason to spend time getting in the best shape possible.

“I feel great,” Rodgers said Tuesday, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “I put a lot of work in this offseason. As much as I love golf, it’s kind of taken a back seat to my workouts, and I’m light as I’ve been I think ever coming back at this time of the year.

“Being under 220 was kind of a goal for me. I hit that goal to start, and now it’s continuing to build my body. But I feel really good. My knees feel great. My arm feels really good.”

A year ago, Rodgers’ offseason commitment involved cutting dairy from his diet, but this year he isn’t dropping golf altogether. He still competed in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and took in the Masters earlier in April:

Rodgers is set to begin his 13th season in the NFL and his 10th as the starter for the Packers. In March, he told Evan Daniels of Fox Sports that he’s using Tom Brady as a model for how to handle himself during the offseason.

Brady, 39, has defied Father Time so far, earning Pro Bowl honors again in 2016 with 28 touchdowns and two interceptions en route to his fifth Super Bowl win. That’s not a bad model for Rodgers to follow.

“It’s fun to be 33 and feel like I’m in the best shape I’ve been in starting an offseason program,” Rodgers said. “So that’s exciting. That was kind of the goal I wanted to hit and just keeping moving forward in that direction.”

His evidently golf-filled offseason of 2016 — which included a round with President Barack Obama — didn’t do much to slow him. The Packers quarterback finished with an NFL-leading 40 touchdown passes with just seven interceptions.
