If you were one of the millions of people who breathed a sigh of relief when Tony Romo replaced Phil Simms as a color analyst on CBS, don’t worry. Nothing has changed. But Simms will remain with CBS as an analyst on its pregame show, The NFL Today, the network announced Wednesday.
Phil Simms will stay with CBS as an analyst on ‘NFL Today’
Tony Romo took his spot in the booth with Jim Nantz, but Simms isn’t done.

“I’m excited to be in the studio,” Simms said via USA Today Sports. “I’ve said for a quite a few years it’d be fun to cover the whole league and watch how all the players and coaches manage the game. I already know J.B. (James Brown) and Boomer (Esiason) from doing Inside the NFL. I am looking forward to the next phase of my broadcast career.”
Simms said he wasn’t done with broadcasting following the announcement that Romo would take his spot at CBS. And he’s not done. Simms will fill the spot vacated by former NFL tight end Tony Gonzalez, who spent three seasons on The NFL Today.
It’s not surprising that Simms will remain with CBS. Just last year, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus had high praise for both Simms and Jim Nantz.
“I think Phil is vastly under-appreciated and part of that is the overreaction to social media,” McManus said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I would just suggest that if people listen to Jim and Phil with an open mind, I think they would recognize what a good job they are doing.”
And hopefully Simms’ new opportunity at CBS means we’ll get many more moments like this one.
Simms spent 19 seasons as the top analyst at CBS, and 13 of those were spent in the booth with Nantz.
