49ers trade up to No. 31 to select Reuben Foster thanks to Seahawks

The Seahawks swapped the pick with the Falcons initially, then traded with their division rival.

The 49ers made another trade in the first round, moving up to No. 31 in order to select Reuben Foster out of Alabama.

In order to move up to grab the linebacker, the 49ers gave up their second-round pick (No. 34) and the fourth-rounder they got from the Bears earlier in the day (No. 111). Foster was the second linebacker taken in the first round.

Foster had to leave the NFL Combine early after he had a “heated argument” with a hospital worker. He apologized to all 32 NFL teams for the incident.

Later, it was revealed that Foster tested positive for a diluted sample at the combine. He told Ian Rapoport that the failed test was because of food poisoning that sent him to the doctor with cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea.

“I couldn’t eat much, but I had to drink water and Gatorade,” Foster told Rapoport. “Then a few coaches said something about me being too light. And I’m a coach-pleaser. I don’t care what everybody thinks, but I care what coaches think.”

He added, “So I drank and ate as much as I could without throwing up. Then I went in there, drinking and drinking water, trying to flush out my system from whatever was making me sick and trying to keep my weight up and took the test.”

Foster will be in the NFL’s drug program because of the test. But he didn’t sound worried about it.

“Put me in the program,” he said. “Test me.”

Foster will be a great addition to a 49ers defense that struggled mightily during the 2016 season.
