Things have been moving slowly for Adrian Peterson in free agency, but he had a visit scheduled for Monday with the New England Patriots, according to Adam Schefter. Peterson wants to play for a contender, and the Patriots certainly fit the bill.

The veteran running back wants to win a Super Bowl, and New England is perpetually in the mix.

Still, Peterson left New England without a deal, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Yates said Peterson could revisit things with the Patriots in the future.
Peterson met with the Seattle Seahawks in March, but nothing materialized. His father, Nelson Peterson, has been vocal about Peterson’s free agency experience. Nelson Peterson identified the Oakland Raiders as a possible destination because of the dominant offensive line. He also singled out the Patriots because of the team’s consistent success.
“If you have an opportunity to play for an organization like the New England Patriots, you have to consider that,’’ Peterson’s father told The St. Paul Pioneer Press. “To have an opportunity to play with Tom Brady, you have to keep that door open as a possibility.’’
The Patriots don’t make a habit of overpaying aging players, and if Peterson is going to land in New England, he’ll probably have to take a significantly smaller contract.
His father said that taking less pay may be worth it for Peterson.
“He wants to try to win a Super Bowl and at the end of the day, if that’s what he thinks he needs to do to attain his goal, whether it’s New England or the Vikings or Oakland, he’d be totally open at that time,’’ the elder Peterson said.
LeGarrette Blount had a career season in New England last year with 1,161 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, but Blount is a free agent. New England has a talented, consistent offensive line, and Peterson could slide right into Blount’s role alongside Dion Lewis and James White.
Peterson is 32 and is coming off a torn meniscus that caused him to miss most of the 2016 season. He averaged just 1.6 yards per carry before suffering the injury in Week 2. He returned to the field in Week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts and had six carries for 22 yards.
