Tony Romo said ‘never say never,’ and 5 other ways he didn’t rule out a possible return to the NFL

He compared himself to Brett Favre and told everyone to “never say never.”

Tony Romo held an introductory press conference over the phone with Chairman of CBS Sports Sean McManus on Tuesday afternoon. It came less than a couple of hours after he was formally announced as the network’s new lead NFL game analyst.

While on the phone with reporters, Romo answered questions about the Houston Texans, which was one of the teams most often considered as a landing spot for him, as well as whether or not he was fully retired from football.

He left the door open — and in plenty of ways.

Romo hinted that he felt like he never accomplished anything

The Cowboys had varying levels of success with Romo under center. In three seasons, he led the team to 11 wins or more, and in four others, the team won just eight with him as QB. The Cowboys came close in the 2014 NFC Divisional round but ultimately fell short.

That left Romo with a bad taste in his mouth:

There’s nothing like feeling unaccomplished. If you’re Tony Romo and feel that you have an opportunity elsewhere to get that coveted Lombardi Trophy, you’re going to take it.

He may not feel that way now, but it can change.

Romo compared his competitive fire to Brett Favre’s

This one is particularly telling. Brett Favre kept all of us on our toes for what seemed like forever when he first went into retirement, before ultimately playing for both the Vikings and Jets.

Now he’s just messing with us.

Houston was a clear front-runner for Romo

The Broncos and Texans were long the two teams assumed to be the best fit for Romo. John Elway deflected Romo interest in late March, seemingly clearing the way for the Texans, who have a team filled with offensive weapons as well as a stout defense. A perfect fit for Romo.

Well, turns out, he felt the same:

There are not a ton of quarterbacks left on the market, and Romo is better than all of them. If the Texans look half decent during the year, don’t count out Romo ditching “America’s most-watched network” for the pigskin.

The decision whether to play or retire was difficult for Romo

I don’t think anybody expected it to be an “easy” decision for Romo, but his indecision between specifically CBS and the Texans leads us to believe there’s still a chance, even if it’s down the road.

Romo said that he was in better health than his best NFL season

In 2014, Romo had his best NFL season. He was 12-3 in 15 starts, completing just under 70 percent of his passes, as well as throwing for over 3,700 yards and 34 touchdowns against just nine interceptions. The Cowboys looked like Super Bowl contenders, and then Dez allegedly didn’t catch that ball.

Well, Romo feels he’s in better shape now:

“The weird thing is” is an obvious way of Romo trying to float out that he can still play. I mean, he did ride the bench all season, after all.

He left the door open and might just be a Justin Bieber fan

If any of the past reasons were too indirect, he unquestionably left the door open right here:

Tony’s either dead set on making us question his every move from now on, or he enjoys listening to some Bieber in his free time.

Keep hope alive, Tony.
