There have been rumblings of a trade involving Richard Sherman for a while, but Pete Carroll tried to douse those flames during the NFL owners meeting. Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider took the opposite approach Wednesday morning, telling ESPN 710 Seattle that the team has considered trading away the three-time All-Pro cornerback.
Richard Sherman trade rumors are real, says Seahawks GM John Schneider
The Seahawks have been fielding calls to trade Richard Sherman, but that doesn’t mean it will happen.

“What you’ve seen lately in the news is real,” Schneider said during an interview on the Brock and Salk Show, via the Seattle Times. “That’s on both sides. It’s just open communication. He knows what’s going on. We know what’s going on.
“I don’t know if anything would ever happen. But like I tell people all the time, 98 percent of the deals that we’re involved with, we don’t follow through with. But at least we’ve opened that door, gone down the road and seen what’s behind door A or door B.”
In the secret world of NFL trade rumors and anonymous sources, Schneider’s comments are surprising. He also made it clear that Sherman has been made aware of the fact that the team has been fielding trade talks and has had an open line of communication with the cornerback.
Carroll told reporters at the end of March that he doubted any trade would happen, although he also admitted that the team has fielded calls.
Sherman, 29, wasn’t quite his typical dominant self during the 2016 season. That likely had a lot to do with a “significant” injury to his MCL that he and the team both kept quiet about during the year.
But it was also a bit of a tumultuous year for the outspoken cornerback who had a shouting match on the sideline with Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and a similar blowup with defensive coordinator Kris Richard earlier in the year.
Still, when healthy, Sherman is one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL and would likely fetch a lot for Seattle in a trade. In 2013, the New York Jets sent 28-year-old Darrelle Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for first- and fourth-round draft picks. Sherman likely would fetch a similar value for the Seahawks.
