Former Cowboys LB Rolando McClain arrested on marijuana, firearm charges

Rolando McClain’s NFL career is almost certainly over after his latest transgression.

Rolando McClain’s career likely ended when the NFL announced an indefinite suspension for the linebacker in December — his third suspension since July 2015. An arrest Friday in Alabama probably put to bed any hope of a comeback.

McClain, 27, was pulled over in Hartselle, Ala. for a window tint violation, but was arrested after an officer found marijuana and a firearm for which McClain didn’t have a permit, according to a Hartselle police spokesman.

The Oakland Raiders picked McClain in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft, but he was waived in 2013 after several off-field incidents — including an arrest in 2011 for third degree assault and a two-game suspension in 2012 for conduct detrimental to the team.

After a brief retirement, McClain revived his career with the Dallas Cowboys, starting 12 games for the team in 2014 and 11 in 2015. But he served a four-game suspension at the beginning of the 2015 season for substance abuse and a 10-game suspension in 2016.

A third violation of the substance abuse policy prevented him from ever seeing the field in 2016 and guaranteed that he wouldn’t be available to play until the latter half of the 2017 season. His latest transgression means that likely won’t happen, and further punishment from the league could be on the way.

McClain was charged Friday with second-degree possession of marijuana, carrying a firearm without a permit, and a misdemeanor equipment violation.
