Colin Kaepernick might finally be getting closer to his NFL return. Sort of. The former 49ers starter is one of two quarterbacks working out for the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

He’ll likely be one of a few quarterbacks auditioning for a potential backup job in Seattle.

For now, it’s just a workout. Teams often bring in a handful of players at positions of need during the offseason so that they can gauge their readiness to play, whether they are fit for the team, etc. Basically, they’re doing their homework in case they end up needing to sign a quarterback or decide they want a better option at backup.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll mentioned the possibility of Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III as potential considerations for his team earlier this month. General manager John Schneider reportedly reached out to Kaepernick’s agent following that.
We’ve made the case before that Kaepernick would be a natural fit in Seattle. The reasons it makes too much sense not to happen include:
- He’s still a good quarterback. (The current backups are Trevone Boykin and Jake Heaps.)
- He’s used to playing behind a not-so-great offensive line.
- It’s a similar offense to what he’s accustomed to.
- He’s got players in Seattle who supported his protest last year and have rallied to his cause.
It’s still a mystery, in a league where Mike Glennon can get a $45 million contract, that a quarterback with Kaepernick’s bona fides can’t get a gig. It’s hard to take seriously commissioner Roger Goodell’s claim that Kaepernick is not being blackballed for his decision to kneel during the national anthem last season, protesting the institutionalized repression of minorities in America. But maybe he’s finally close to getting another shot.
