It’s been a disappointing year for Manchester United, but all will be forgiven if they win on Wednesday. The Red Devils are after the trophy in the UEFA Europa League final against Ajax, but the match represents something bigger as well — qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

Jose Mourinho’s first season in Manchester will be a success if he gets the win on Wednesday.

That same thing is on the line for Ajax, who finished second in the Eredivisie and have to go through qualifying to get to next year’s Champions League as it stands. But for them, the prize of winning the Europa League means even more.
This is Ajax’s first European final in 20 years, and they had to get through tough fights with Copenhagen, Lyon, and Schalke to get here. Winning the Europa League would be a massive achievement for first-year manager Peter Bosz and his extremely young squad — only one first choice player for Ajax is over 25 years old.
A number of Manchester United players have been battling injury troubles over the last two months of the season, but all have recovered save for four. Luke Shaw, Ashley Young, Marcos Rojo, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all have longer-term injuries and will not be fit for the final. Eric Bailly is also out with a suspension. Ajax has a clean bill of health, but Nick Viergever is banned.
