Ryan Grigson turns failed stint with Colts into an executive job with the Browns

Ryan Grigson once sent the Browns a first-round pick for Trent Richardson. Now he works for the team.

Former Indianapolis Colts general manager Ryan Grigson didn’t have to wait long for a second chance. Four months after he was fired, the Cleveland Browns announced Wednesday that he will join the team as senior personnel executive and report to vice president of player personnel Andrew Berry.

The Browns will hope Grigson shows the scouting talent that he displayed in eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and not the work he did with the Colts.

“Ryan brings valuable experience to our personnel group,” said Browns executive vice president Sashi Brown in a statement. “He was raised as a road-scout and has been evaluating talent in this league for almost 20 years. We place a premium on that experience and on his passion for football. Ryan has much to offer to any personnel department and we are pleased that he chose to join our staff.”

While Grigson has nearly 20 years’ worth of scouting and executive experience, the hire by the Browns will only draw jokes after his unsuccessful stint in Indianapolis.

During Grigson’s tenure, the Colts drafted horribly with only Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton really turning into success stories. He also gave away a first-round pick to the Browns to acquire Trent Richardson in 2013, who averaged 3.1 yards per carry in 29 games with the Colts.

The extra pick didn’t help the Browns out either, as Cleveland used it in a deal to land Johnny Manziel in the 2014 NFL draft.

Now the Browns and Grigson will work together to try to rewrite their reputations.
