A minor leaguer joined a bench-clearing brawl by wildly chucking a baseball at the scrum

The minor leagues are where progress and innovation happen.

There was a brawl in the minor leagues on Sunday. On its own, this would be unremarkable. There are brawls in the minors all the time. This one, however, featured someone with the foresight to bring a baseball into a baseball brawl.

The Unwritten Rules of Skipping a Few Steps and Going Right To the Retaliatory Plunking

Yes, we’ll get there. It all started when Dayton Dragons player Jose Siri slid into second base on a steal, and West Michigan Whitecaps shortstop Daniel Pinero stepped on his ankle getting up.

Siri, already upset throughout the whole game by people asking him what the weather was and how to get home*, shoved the much larger Pinero. And while there were very excited and angry people, it was still a standard baseball fight, with lots of pushing and yelling, but no more.

Until this guy showed up:

That’s from this alternate angle of this video:

Based on extensive forensic work with both videos, it looks like the ball deflects off this guy ...

... and hits this guy in the beans ...

... at which point, the second guy holds up his hands as if to say, “Really? Who does that?”

According to MiLB.com in an article headlined “Dragons Fall in 10 Innings, 2-1,” the baseball bandit was Eduardo Jimenez, a reliever for the Whitecaps. According to the report, he “ran to (the) scene carrying multiple baseballs,” which suggests some serious premeditation and raises so, so many questions that we don’t have time for.

He’s ... he’s been thinking about this possible scenario for a long time, hasn’t he?

Next time they mess with one of our guys, I’m a gonna grab a baseball and wing it at someone.

No, two baseballs.

Pockets full of baseballs, let’s see them try to stop me.

A suit made of baseballs that shoots baseballs from the arms.

Order was restored and suspensions are coming. Let us never forget, though, that a dude brought baseballs into a regular baseball fight and skipped right to the retaliation. While that seems dangerous and I cannot condone it, I do admire the foresight and experimentation.
