Torrey Smith says Colin Kaepernick is still unsigned because teams ‘can’t get over a protest’

He’s correct.

Colin Kaepernick is the best quarterback on the market right now. Still, he remains unsigned because of his decision to protest oppression of people of color by taking a knee during the national anthem.

Torrey Smith shared some thoughts about his former teammate.

Smith’s comments were prompted by a statement from Giants owner John Mara, who said he heard consistently from fans who didn’t want the team to sign Kaepernick.

“All my years being in the league, I never received more emotional mail from people than I did about that issue,” Mara said, via the MMQB. “If any of your players ever do that, we are never coming to another Giants game. It wasn’t one or two letters. It was a lot…

“It’s an emotional, emotional issue for a lot of people, more so than any other issue I’ve run into.”

The Giants re-signed kicker Josh Brown despite being aware of his history of domestic violence. They kept him on the roster and “remained supportive” after details emerged about the abuse he had inflicted on his wife.

Smith noted the double standard.

Kaepernick has said that he will stand for the anthem next season, but it hasn’t made a difference. He did visit the Seahawks last week, and he would be a smart fit as Russell Wilson’s backup, but he remains unsigned.
