Always Dreaming was a popular pick for some experts going into the 2017 Kentucky Derby, and they were right. Always Dreaming ran a stellar race, keeping pace with the front-runners in the opening part of the race before taking over and winning in dominant fashion.

It was the 143rd Run for the Roses, the biggest event in horse racing, at least until a Triple Crown is in play.

Classic Empire finished in fourth, with Battle of Midway in third and Lookin At Lee finishing in second from the first post. Thunder Snow pulled up lame and did not finish the run. One of the very popular picks, McCraken, finished in eighth while Irish War Cry came in 10th.

Classic Empire was favored to win this year’s race for quite some time, but things changed shortly after betting opened on Saturday. That’s when Always Dreaming was installed as the favorite, with Irish War Cry eventually ending up at 9-2 odds just before race time, same as Always Dreaming.

Now we’ll look toward the Preakness Stakes to determine if Always Dreaming has a shot at a Triple Crown. American Pharoah earned it in 2015, the first horse to do it in 37 years, so all eyes in the horse racing world turn to the 141st running of the Preakness Stakes on May 20.
