Mike Tomlin cracks Patriots joke during commencement speech at Robert Morris University

Tomlin had some fun with the Antonio Brown Facebook Live debacle during his speech.

Mike Tomlin addressed recent graduates of Robert Morris University in suburban Pittsburgh at commencement on Friday. Tomlin managed to work in a zinger about the Patriots while also poking fun at the infamous Antonio Brown Facebook Live video that Brown shared from the locker room immediately after the Steelers’ playoff win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

In the Facebook Live video, Tomlin referred to the Patriots as “assholes.” He fully owned it in a humorous way during his commencement speech.

”I’ll proceed with a couple of assumptions,” Tomlin said. “And I realize that assumptions are very dangerous. There’s a cliche about assuming, isn’t it? It can make Patriots out of you and me.”

Tomlin’s Facebook Live jokes didn’t stop there.

“I’ll proceed with the assumption that, in some form or fashion, one or more of you out there are somehow live-streaming this on the internet,” Tomlin said. “And I’ll behave accordingly.”

Jokes aside, Tomlin also had wise advice for the recent graduates about pursuing their passion as a career option. He shared a story about making decisions about his future when he graduated from William & Mary.

“There were discussions about law school and corporate America and a few business opportunities that came my way,” Tomlin said. “That day I had a conversation with my parents, and I told them I was going to take a job coaching wide receivers at Virginia Military Institute for $12,000 annually.”

The crowd laughed.

“That’s the response that my parents had,” Tomlin joked.

It worked out fine for Tomlin. That decision steered him to his NFL career, and he’s led the Steelers to two AFC Championship wins and a victory in Super Bowl XLIII.

After the Facebook Live video went viral, Tomlin apologized for his “regrettable” language and said Brown would face punishment from the team. But now that some time has passed, it’s clear that Tomlin is able to join the rest of us in laughing about it.
