Warriors saved themselves with a monster run in the 2nd quarter of Game 5

We’ve seen this plenty of times before, but it doesn’t get old.

The Warriors went on one of those signature demoralizing runs against the Cavaliers in the second quarter of Game 5. It was much needed after playing poorly in the first 14 minutes of the game.

A 21-4 run starting at 10:20 left in the quarter fueled the Warriors to a 54-43 lead and the Oracle Arena crowd to its usual roaring ways. Golden State wasn’t out of the game, but it didn’t look like itself at the start of the contest.

In the run, Kevin Durant had eight points, including this deep three-pointer over LeBron James. The offense was flowing, but Durant was clearly in a rhythm. When a player like him gets going, you let him cook.

Stephen Curry had five points during the run, including this floater after drawing Kyrie Irving out to the three-point line with a hesitation.

Part of the Warriors’ magic is the multiple threats that multiple players pose, and Curry’s basket was a great example of that.

Durant finished the quarter with 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 on three-pointers. Curry and Andre Iguodala each had eight points in the quarter, in which the Warriors outscored the Cavaliers, 38-23.

The Warriors’ run, which is understandably frustrating for whoever is on the receiving end, ended up leading to a scuffle between the two teams.

Up until that run, the Cavaliers had played a great half. It’s why the Warriors were so heavily favored coming into the Finals in the first place.

There are so many ways they can bury you, and their second quarter performance was a beautiful display of it.
