The Rams had high hopes for Greg Robinson when they selected him second overall in the 2014 draft. Now they’re moving on from Robinson after trading him to the Detroit Lions in exchange for a 2018 sixth-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Lions have needs along the offensive line after starting left tackle Taylor Decker suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery. Robinson wasn’t the Lions’ only addition to the offensive line on Thursday. They also brought in tackle Cyrus Kouandjio, who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 2014 draft, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.
Robinson was a coveted tackle during the 2014 draft because of his athleticism and run-blocking talent. The offense Auburn ran during his tenure there was focused on the run, and transitioning to the NFL exposed Robinson’s weaknesses as a pass blocker.
Some analysts felt Robinson projected better as a guard at the NFL level, but the Rams stuck with him at tackle. He didn’t live up to expectations, and he was benched twice during the 2016 season. This offseason, he appeared to be stuck behind Jamon Brown on the depth chart.
Kouandjio was able to crack the starting lineup in Buffalo twice in 2015 and five times in 2016. He suffered a hip injury at home this offseason that required surgery, but Bills head coach Sean McDermott said in May that he should be healthy enough to participate in training camp. Kouandjio was also involved in an odd run-in with police this offseason. He was released by the Bills on May 24.
The Lions needed offensive line help with Decker sidelined without a clear return date. Now they have a former first-rounder and second-rounder to compete for that role.
