LeBron James tweeted his support of David Griffin, who stepped down as Cavs GM

The Cavaliers parted ways with GM David Griffin on Monday. Usually, The King gets what he wants. Not this time.

A half-hour before midnight, LeBron James tweeted his appreciation of Cleveland’s ex-GM David Griffin, who stepped down Monday evening after 3 years at the helm.

Griffin cited “fit” as the sticking point in negotiations, and his announcement came hours after owner Dan Gilbert said the two jointly agreed to part ways. It was an odd situation to say the least.

But Gilbert also made the decision without consulting LeBron James. , the all-world superstar whose schlepped the franchise to three consecutive NBA Finals appearances and its first-ever championship in 2016.

In fact, James had advocated for a contract extension for Griffin in April, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Dave McMenamin, saying “it makes no sense why [Griffin] shouldn’t get an extension.”

“He’s pulled every move -- he’s tried to make every move happen -- to better this team to be able to compete for a championship,” James said, according to Windhorst and Dave McMenamin. “So we wouldn’t be in this position, obviously, without him and without the guys that are here -- from the coaching staff to the players to Griff. He’s been a big piece of it.”

Like James said, Griffin was a huge part of the Cavs’ championship run that fell second only to one of the best-constructed teams in NBA history. And usually, when James wants something done in Cleveland, it happens.

When LeBron said Tristan Thompson needed to get paid, the Cavaliers gave him $80 million. When he said the same for J.R. Smith, the Cavs coughed that money up, too. And when LeBron demanded Cleveland add a playmaker, they both signed Deron Williams AND traded for Kyle Korver, midseason.

When LeBron says jump, the Cavs usually leap. But this is different. Griffin and Gilbert couldn’t come to an agreement on the future of the franchise, according to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski. That could mean a difference on how (or whether) to add more firepower around LeBron for another run at the Warriors next season.

James’ tweet adds another dimension to the state of the Cavs this summer. He is set to enter free agency in the summer of 2018. And if Griffin’s departure against The King’s wishes was just the first domino to fall, there could be more shakeups in Cleveland in the near future.
