The Vegas Golden Knights didn’t wait long to make more trades, agreeing to send defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk and a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes for the No. 62 overall pick in the 2017 NHL entry draft on Thursday. The deal, first reported by TSN’s Frank Seravalli, has been made official by both teams.

TVR is heading to Carolina.

The Golden Knights selected van Riemsdyk as their expansion draft pick from the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night. The defenseman is under contract for one more year at an $825,000 cap hit before he hits restricted free agency in the summer of 2018.
It was no surprise that van Riemsdyk was the expansion pick from the Blackhawks, who didn’t leave a ton of talent available. He’s a solid third-pairing defenseman who can move the puck and occasionally make a good scoring play while pinching into the fray. He’s also quite cheap for another season, which is primarily what makes him appealing.
Carolina currently has seven forwards under contract for next season now: van Riemsdyk, Justin Faulk, Noah Hanifin, Brett Pesce, Klas Dahlbeck, Ryan Murphy, and Jaccob Slavin. That’s not a bad mix of young players for the up-and-coming Hurricanes, who will be looking to make the leap back into the postseason in 2017-18.
Van Riemsdyk, 25, set a career-high with 16 points in 58 games with the Blackhawks last season. He played in 158 games over two-plus seasons with the team, recording eight goals and 23 assists. He also won a Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2015.
