Chiefs shockingly part ways with GM John Dorsey

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Thursday that they have mutually agreed to part ways with general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey will move on from the Chiefs effective immediately.

“I notified John that we would not be extending his contract beyond the 2017 season, and after consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now,” team CEO and chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement released by the Chiefs.

The news came on the heels of Andy Reid’s contract extension. The Chiefs have made it to the postseason in three out of the past four years, which earned Reid some job security in Kansas City. Dorsey was not afforded the same privilege.

It’s especially surprising considering that Hunt said he wanted to extend both Reid and Dorsey during the owners’ meetings in March.

“I want to thank Clark, the Hunt family and the Chiefs fans for the opportunity to be a part of Chiefs Kingdom over the last four seasons,” Dorsey said, via the team. “I believe this team is well positioned for the future and I wish Coach Reid, the players and the entire organization all the best.”

The Chiefs lost their former director of football operations, Chris Ballard, when Ballard accepted the job as the Indianapolis Colts’ general manager following the 2016 season. If Ballard were still on staff, he would be a logical successor for Dorsey.

Dorsey played linebacker for the Packers. After retiring from the NFL, he spent the early part of his career in Green Bay’s scouting department. There’s speculation that Dorsey could eventually take over for Ted Thompson with the Packers.

Dorsey was hired by the Chiefs in 2013, along with Reid. Over his tenure as general manager, the Chiefs have a 43-21 record.
