Methot’s time as a member of the Golden Knights didn’t last long.

The Dallas Stars added a veteran presence to their blue line by acquiring defenseman Marc Methot from the Vegas Golden Knights, the teams announced Monday. The Golden Knights receive a 2020 second-round pick and goaltender prospect Dylan Ferguson to complete the deal.

Ferguson was the Stars’ seventh-round pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft.

Methot, 32, was the Golden Knights’ expansion draft pick from the Ottawa Senators. An 11-year NHL veteran, he was one of the oldest players Vegas selected. Unsurprisingly, for a team looking to build around youth, his stay was brief as the Golden Knights mainly selected him to be a trade asset.

For the Stars, Methot provides an immediate upgrade to their blue line, which currently has John Klingberg, Esa Lindell, Dan Hamhuis, Stephen Johns, and Greg Pateryn under contract. Dallas just re-signed Lindell to a two-year, $4.4 million contract, and still has RFA rights to Patrik Nemeth and Jamie Oleksiak. Top prospect Julius Honka could also factor into the Stars’ plans.

Methot has lots of experience playing next to an elite right-handed defenseman in Erik Karlsson, and could be a good fit next to another high-scoring righty in Klingberg. That’d also allow the Stars to use Hamhuis and Lindell on the other two pairings, helping Dallas to spread its defensive talent around a bit.

The Stars take on the final two years of Methot’s contract, which includes a $4.9 million annual cap hit. Last season, Methot recorded 12 points in 68 regular season games. He added four points in 18 playoff games during the Senators’ run to the Eastern Conference Final.
