9 can’t-miss sports events to watch this weekend

Do you like sports? Good! So do we!

James Dator
James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.

It’s getting to be unbearably hot outside, sports are ending — summer is upon us. This could be the last weekend we get to see any NBA or NHL until the fall, so we might as well enjoy it while we can.

The exciting thing about the end of basketball and hockey is that we can throw all our energy into baseball at the best possible time. This season is already shaping up to be surprising and awesome, which is going to make the road to the playoffs amazing.

WHAT TO WATCH

All times Eastern.

NBA

The Warriors and Cavaliers could meet for the last time on Friday night with Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC at 9 p.m. No matter what happens, it’s a win-win. Either Golden State sweeps and basketball has invoked its own mercy rule, or we get a few days to make a TON of “3-1 lead” jokes before Game 5 on Monday night.

NHL

It could all be over Sunday. The Stanley Cup will be in attendance in Nashville for Game 6, starting at 8 p.m. on NBC. The Penguins rolled over the Predators in Game 5 with a 6-0 shutout victory. However, no home team has lost yet in the Stanley Cup Final. We NEED a Game 7 in this already amazing series.

MLB

There’s a really great AL East rivalry game with the Orioles and Yankees facing off at 1:05 p.m. Sunday on the MLB Network. The Yankees lead the AL East (34-23), but the Orioles aren’t far off (31-27).

SOCCER

The USMNT got saved by some Christian Pulisic magic in the second half on Thursday night to get a 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, but there’s a much bigger test looming. USA faces Mexico in the next World Cup qualifier on Sunday night, starting at 8:30 p.m. on FS1.

NASCAR

NASCAR moves to the “tricky triangle” at Pocono in Pennsylvania this week for the start of the second half of the regular season. Green flag is set to wave at 3:20 p.m. Sunday, FS1.

F1

Montreal hosts the next race in the Formula 1 schedule with the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday at 2 p.m. on NBC. Sebastian Vettel has a firm grip on first place in the standings coming hot off the heels with a win in Monaco, but Lewis Hamilton has been jockeying with him all season long. This is going to be a great race.

WNBA

The best game of the weekend happens on Friday night with the Minnesota Lynx facing the Washington Mystics at 7 p.m. on WNBA League Pass. The Lynx are undefeated but up for their toughest test on the road against a Mystics team that’s on the rise and figuring itself out behind new addition Elena Delle Donne.

TENNIS

It’s finals weekend! The women’s final between Simona Halep and Jelena Ostapenko will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, NBC. The men’s final is on Sunday morning, also at 9 a.m. on NBC, and will see Stan Wawrinka face Rafael Nadal.

NCAA BASEBALL

The MLB Draft is on Monday, which makes the tournament games this weekend fascinating if you’re looking to the future. Brendan McKay is the top-ranked left handed pitcher AND top-ranked first baseman, and Louisville faces Kentucky starting at noon on ESPN or ESPN2 on Saturday and Sunday.

WHAT TO READ

LeBron and the Cavaliers are at their best, and it’s woefully inadequate against the Warriors.

James Comey’s testimony became the weirdest event in Washington D.C. sports bars.

Marshawn Lynch has Oakland buzzing — and for good reason.

Scooter Gennett hit four home runs and cemented his place in weird baseball history.

LeBron James is doing everything he can in the NBA Finals, and he’s helpless.

A Bills cornerback spent over $900 to take an Uber from Chicago to Buffalo.

Hot sauce is life for Noah Syndergaard.
