Well, that was tough to watch. Max Scherzer took the mound in Arizona ready to put on the type of pitching performance he’s used to (he was probably hoping for something around his current 2.01 ERA and 0.797 WHIP), and he almost immediately got absolutely clobbered by the Diamondbacks offense.
Diamondbacks offense absolutely clobbers Max Scherzer with 3 back-to-back homers
The first inning didn’t go as planned for Washington and their ace.

Arizona got things started with Dave Peralta, A.J. Pollack, and Jake Lamb hitting back-to-back-to-back homers off of Washington’s ace, followed by an RBI single to finish off the bludgeoning. This is the first game in Diamondbacks history in which they kicked things off with three bombs in a row.
It sure took them long enough to accomplish this, because obviously these types of first innings happen all the time.
The last time anything close happened to Scherzer was last year when he let up four home runs to the Cubs, but he’s never given up three homers in an inning and definitely not all in a row. All season, Scherzer has only let up three earned runs - four runs total - in the first inning.
Not content to just let up four runs on five hits, he also walked a guy. A rare type of Scherzer start, that’s for sure.
He got out of the first inning after only 37 pitches, which is maybe not as bad as it could be considering the circumstances. But it’s still pretty bad.
