The Seahawks’ safeties are essential to the success of the Legion of Boom. Seattle made sure Kam Chancellor will be a part of it going forward with a contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. It’s a 3-year, $36 million deal, according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, and it includes $25 million in guarantees.

The Seahawks have nearly $48 million, and 29 percent of the total salary cap, invested in the secondary. The money they have dedicated to defensive backs is the most in the league.
Chancellor was entering the final year of his contract with the Seahawks, and he was set to count $8.1 million against the cap this season. Pete Carroll said Sunday that the Seahawks had “looked long and hard” at the possibility of extending Chancellor, but they weren’t quite there yet, according to the News Tribune’s Gregg Bell. That changed Tuesday.
Earl Thomas and Chancellor are arguably the most important pieces in Seattle’s defense. The Seahawks looked like a different team last season after Thomas landed on injured reserve with a broken leg.
Chancellor played in 12 games last season for the Seahawks. The four-time Pro Bowler finished the season fourth on the team with 85 tackles, and he added two picks and one forced fumble.
He said he wants to end his career with the Seahawks, the team that drafted him in the fifth round of the 2010 draft.
”I love this team,” Chancellor said, via ESPN’s Sheil Kapadia. “They gave me the first opportunity, the only opportunity. And I would love to retire here.”
Chancellor is 29, and this extension makes that possibility very real.
