Marshawn Lynch dodged questions about sitting for the national anthem like only he can

The Raiders running back answered media questions Thursday as long as they didn’t have to do with the national anthem.

Marshawn Lynch is notoriously tight-lipped in his conversations with the media, but there were many wondering if he’d speak about his decision to sit during the national anthem before his first preseason game with the Oakland Raiders. The answer was no.

When asked about it Thursday, Lynch rambled about nothing in particular and gave no real answer about his motivations.

The video is quiet, but he was first asked about the “elephant in the room.”

“I think that elephant just left the room cause a little mouse ran in here,” Lynch said. “Didn’t they say elephants are scared of mouses or something? That motherfucker left, cousin.”

Then he was asked if it’d matter to him if Raiders fans wearing his jersey sit or stand for the anthem.

“When we run ‘74’ or something like that where I’ve got to scan and read both sides, that’d be pretty difficult. But for the most part, I’m a veteran so I can make it work.”

If you don’t know what the hell he’s talking about, we don’t either, and that’s pretty much the point.

When Jack Del Rio was asked about Lynch after the game Saturday night, the Raiders coach said he didn’t know that the running back would sit but was told after the game that it was nothing new.

Lynch spoke supportively of Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the national anthem in 2016, but it seems Lynch’s decision not to stand predates Kaepernick’s, even if he wasn’t consistent about standing or sitting.

Maybe one day he’ll explain his decision-making process, but it wasn’t Thursday. He was forthcoming for other questions, though, even if he was his usual brief self for one.
