Solheim Cup 2017: Lexi Thompson drives 1st green in opening foursomes match

Lexi shrugs off illness in time to reach the green with her tee shot on the opening hole of the Solheim Cup.

Lexi Thompson set a scorching pace for the Americans in the first match of the Solheim Cup when the big-hitting Floridian drove the green on the 286-yard, par-4 first hole at Des Moines Golf and Country Club.

With a 3-wood.

Cristie Kerr, Thompson’s partner in the opening foursomes match with Mel Reid and Charley Hull, put an exclamation point on her teammate’s tee shot by draining the 10-foot putt for an eagle-2 that gave Team USA a very early 1-up advantage.

Thompson, who battled a virus heading into Friday’s start to the biennial competition, watched as Europe’s Reid almost hit the putting surface with her tee shot and then outdid her on the short hole.

Three groups after Thompson’s stellar shot, in the anchor spot, Gerina “I didn’t come here to lay up” Piller flew the first green with her tee shot:
