Conor McGregor appeared to try to hammer-fist Floyd Mayweather in the back of the head during the third round of their bout on Friday, prompting a referee’s warning. Under the rules of the fight, punches to the back of the head aren’t allowed.

During the final bout of the night before the main event, Gervonta Davis won on a controversial knockout against opponent Francisco Fonseca in the eighth round, after Davis fisted the back of Fonseca’s head. That punch drew widespread rebuke online and on Showtime’s broadcast, with Davis accused of winning cheap. Davis is a member of Mayweather’s promotional brand, Mayweather Promotions.
If McGregor were to keep going after the back of Mayweather’s head, he’d be risking a point deduction. Given Mayweather’s penchant for winning long, drawn-out fights, any points deduction early on could come back to hurt McGregor when judicial decisions are being reached. The first three rounds of the fight were competitive.
