The first week of the 2017 regular season is just about coming to a close with two Monday Night games remaining. Most fantasy football leagues will run their waiver wires late Tuesday or early Wednesday, but we are here to help you get a jump on the best options to consider.

We will be ranking the top five players likely to be available in your league at each of the four major positions. Some weeks there might not be five good options available, but we’ll scour for the best we can find. Additionally, throughout the week, we will update each of these articles as ownership percentages change and news arrives. The following ownership percentages come via CBS Sportsline after Week 1.
Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs (34 percent owned)
The Thursday night beatdown of the defending champions seems like weeks ago, but don’t sleep on the Chiefs offense. Smith is never flashy and certainly not as exciting as guys like Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce. But look who gets those guys the ball: Smith threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns. With Spencer Ware on IR, the Chiefs are going to be a throw-first offense — Smith either threw or ran 40 times and handed off 20 — and he clearly has the weapons to produce big numbers.
Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans (26)
A quarterback was benched in the Jaguars-Texans game, and it wasn’t Blake Bortles. Things already look desperate in Houston after a dreadful showing on Sunday, and that only speeds up the clock on Watson’s ascendancy to the starting job. It might not happen this week, but it’s hard to imagine it won’t happen sooner rather than later. Watson was 12-of-23 with 102 yards, a touchdown and a pick, with 16 rushing yards. Nothing special, but something to build on. He’s worth a stash-and-wait.
Here’s the rookie quarterback you want to get on your roster. Kizer defied expectations at Notre Dame, and he’s looking like he might do the same in the NFL. Drawing a brutal assignment in his regular season debut, Kizer acquitted himself nicely, completing 20 of 30 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for another score. He did throw one brutal interception, but he kept the Browns in the game and seems certain to keep improving as the season goes on.
Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams (15)
So much to unpack in that destruction of the Colts in L.A., but not to be overlooked was a 300-yard passing game from Goff, who might be gaining some trust after a rough rookie season. If Todd Gurley rebounds off his miserable 2016 and the defense is respectable, Goff is going to have a chance to get comfortable in the pocket, cut down on mistakes and make plays. Having Sammy Watkins and Cooper Kupp doesn’t hurt either.
Glennon threw the ball 40 times on Sunday. That probably won’t be the last time he does that. Guys who throw it 40 times generally put up numbers. And if Tarik Cohen is for real, then Glennon has a chance to see some pedestrian throws turn into big-play touchdowns. If you’re desperate on a bye week, Glennon is worth a flier.
