Stephon Marbury says he’s staging a comeback to the NBA

Age means nothing for Starbury.

Fan favorite and Chinese Basketball Association megastar Stephon Marbury took to Twitter to announce that he is preparing to make a comeback to the NBA at the tender age of 40.

It’s been nearly a decade since the last time Starbury touched an NBA court in a brief 23-game stint with the Boston Celtics in the 2008-09 season. He left a $1.3 million offer from the Celtics on the table after that season, thinking a better offer would come along.

Marbury signed with the Beijing Ducks in the 2011-12 season and went on to win three championships in six seasons before being released at the end of last season. He originally planned to retire in 2018 before being released.

Starbury is a New York basketball legend who had a successful, yet controversial, NBA career. He’s 40 years old, so the chances of a return are bleak. But it would be incredibly fun for him to finish off his basketball career where it started in the NBA.

There’s no way Marbury is still this good, but it’s fun to remember exactly how good he was. Here’s a top-10 play mix from his career in the NBA (via NBA):

He hasn’t played in the league in nearly 10 years and he’s a 40-year-old point guard who probably has very little to offer on both ends, so it’s hard to imagine him having a successful comeback attempt. But, man, it would be fun to have Marbury in the league again.

Maybe he could come in and play the same role as Jason Kidd did for the 2013 Knicks. But even then he’d have to be solid defensively. That’s a lot to ask for a point guard who hasn’t seen NBA talent in so long and has never been a defensive stalwart.

It’s an incredibly fun story and it’s already fun to imagine the former All-Star making a return to the league. He’s still a legend that quite a few players around the league grew up watching. He wouldn’t get a retirement tour by any means, but it’d be interesting to see how Marbury would be received again league-wide after his return.
