Joe Thomas is the NFL’s ultimate Iron Man, and now he’s reached a milestone no player is believed to have ever crossed. The Cleveland Browns offensive tackle has now played in 10,000 consecutive snaps.
Joe Thomas is probably the 1st NFL player with 10,000 consecutive snaps. That’s unreal.
The left tackle started Week 1 as a rookie and has never come off the field for the Browns offense.

Thomas, 32, played in his 162nd game with the Browns on Sunday. He started Week 1 in his rookie season in 2007 and has never missed a single offensive snap in more than 10 seasons.
Even players in other sports can appreciate how ridiculous that is.
“He is amazing,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said Wednesday. “You guys know how I feel about Joe Thomas. What he has done and how he has done it is remarkable to me. We are talking about a guy who has never missed a snap. That is kind of unheard of.
“I see guys come out for things where I go, ‘Whoa.’ Now, it amazes me if anybody ever comes out of a game having been around Joe Thomas and seeing what he has done. I think our players see that, too. I think a lot of that rubs off in our locker room. You talk about a guy who is an iron man? That is a true iron man. That is truly what it is all about.”
The NFL hasn’t tracked snaps long enough to have a definitive answer whether 10,000 is the record. But in a sport as violent as football, all it would’ve taken is a quick roll of the ankle for Thomas to miss even one snap and end the streak. Heck, he could’ve lost a shoe at one point and missed a play.
Instead, the 10-time Pro Bowler has been on the field every damn time a Browns quarterback started a play — no matter how many different guys that has been under center. For now, it’s DeShone Kizer, a rookie who can already appreciate how absurd Thomas’ accomplishment is.
Aside from being a remarkably durable and a consistently great offensive tackle, Thomas is one of the few offensive linemen in the NFL who have stood out with personality, as well.
Thomas always crushes it on picture day, he’s an excellent follow on Twitter, and don’t forget the fact that he’s the “first offensive lineman in NFL history.”
The Browns are 48-114 during Thomas’ tenure with the team, but he never packed it in and hopes his impressive streak can be a source of inspiration for other players.
After the game he tweeted his appreciation to those who congratulated him:
Thomas is under contract through the 2018 season and has talked about considering retirement, but also hasn’t ruled out continuing to play on another deal. To even approach some of the other Iron Man records in the NFL, Thomas would have to play a lot longer.
Brett Favre is the record holder for consecutive starts with 297 over a span of more than 18 years. Eli Manning is the current consecutive starts king and will make his 201st consecutive start Monday against the Detroit Lions.
But the consecutive snaps streak is all Thomas’, and it’s probably a safe bet that he’ll keep pushing it further.
