Cam Newton leaves game with leg injury vs. Bills, returns without missing a snap

Derek Anderson prepared to replace Cam Newton in the game, but the starter returned.

Cam Newton was sacked by the Buffalo Bills in the third quarter and stayed down before limping off the field. The injury was ruled an ankle problem by the team, but Newton returned on the next drive without missing a play.

Newton hobbled off the field to the sideline where he was evaluated in the team’s medical tent. The sack came on third down, so the Bills took over on offense, but Anderson was warming up on the sideline after the sack.

Newton later exited the tent and was warming up on the sideline for Carolina before returning.

Buffalo’s sack appeared to tangle Newton’s leg underneath him and awkwardly crumple it as he went to the ground.

Losing the 2015 NFL MVP at all would be a huge loss to an offense that is already struggling to score with Newton at quarterback. Anderson was forced into a starting role for the team in 2016 for two games, but finished with two touchdowns and five interceptions in a pair of losses.

Newton missed most of preseason and almost the entire offseason after undergoing shoulder surgery. It appears as though he’ll be back without a hitch, though.
