Sean Payton says White House needs ‘a little bit more wisdom’ in response to Donald Trump

Payton responded to Trump after his team’s win against Carolina.

President Donald Trump’s comments two days ago — that when NFL owners see players “disrespecting the flag,” they should say, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired” — led to numerous demonstrations across the NFL on Sunday.

After their win against the Panthers, Saints head coach Sean Payton spoke about Trump, saying “I think we need a little bit more wisdom in that office.”

Here’s Payton’s entire comments on Trump, from the video:

“I would say, personally, I’m disappointed in the comments that were made. I think we need a little bit more wisdom in that office. That’s being a little blunt, but that’s how I feel. You know, I want that guy to be one of the smarter guys in the room. And it seems like every time he’s opening his mouth, it’s something that is dividing our country and not pulling us together. And that has nothing to do with my feelings about the anthem, but just my take [over the last] 24 hours. So, that’s how I feel.”

Saints wide receiver Brandon Coleman raised a fist after scoring a touchdown in celebration.

There were many displays during the national anthem on Sunday. Some teams stayed in the locker room for the anthem, some players raised a fist, some took a knee, and some linked arms amongst themselves, and with their team’s owners.

Trump doubled down on his stance on Saturday and on Sunday, saying again that he felt kneeling was “not acceptable.”

Many of the players and owners locking arms on Sunday spoke out against Trump. Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and Jaguars owner Shad Khan both released statements in response, and stood with their respective teams on Sunday.

Payton’s comments are among the strongest we’ve seen delivered by an NFL head coach since Trump’s initial comments over the weekend.
