Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan earned a two-game suspension for landing a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit on Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams in Week 4.

What happened?

With a 21-7 lead late in the third quarter, the Packers were in the red zone, looking to increase their lead. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw an 8-yard pass to Adams over the middle. Players on the Bears’ defense swarmed to the ball to stop Adams. A few seconds later, Trevathan swooped in and laid a helmet-to-hemet hit on a defenseless Adams.

Adams laid on the turf motionless, and players immediately signaled to the sidelines for medical help. The officials slapped Trevathan with a unnecessary roughness penalty. Adams left Lambeau Field on a stretcher, but he gave a thumbs up to let everyone know that he was fine. Moments later, the Packers tweeted that Adams was conscious and had feelings in his extremities. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluations.

On Friday, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Adams suffered a concussion and the MRI was clean. Even though Adams suffered a concussion, the Packers received some great news from Adams himself.

For Trevathan, the referees should have ejected him after enforcing the unnecessary roughness call. Earlier this year, the league approved a rule where referees must automatically eject a player after his first unnecessary roughness penalty. The NFL also has the authority to suspend that player.

Trevathan finished the game, but Rapoport reported a day later that the NFL was reviewing the hit for a possible suspension. Now, the Bears will have to play without their starting linebacker for two games.

What does this mean for Trevathan?

Trevathan is a solid linebacker, but his hit on Adams was unnecessary and gruesome. The 27-year-old collected 29 tackles for the Bears’ 30th-ranked defense. This unit will miss Trevathan’s veteran presence, but this defense is horrible with him in the lineup. Let’s hope he doesn’t try to land a hit like that ever again.
