Mohamed Sanu’s critical first down overturned thanks to the NFL’s catch rule

The playoffs wouldn’t be complete without catch rule madness.

The catch rule strikes again!

In the fourth quarter down 15-10, the Falcons were faced with a third-and-6 at their own 42. Matt Ryan threw a pass to Mohamed Sanu, gaining a first down:

However, the play would be reviewed, and the officials ruled that Sanu didn’t come down with the catch. The ball moved on Sanu’s way down, and it would be fourth down for the Falcons.

The Falcons ended up getting a first down anyway after Ryan found Julio Jones down the middle of the field:

It appeared that Sanu could have possibly regained possession after pressing the ball against the back of his fingers, but there was too much movement for the officials to stick with the call on the field.
