Roger Federer, at 36 years old, has won his 20th Grand Slam singles title with a win over Marin Cilic in the finals of the 2018 Australian Open. It was a five-set battle, but Federer prevailed, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

In the first set, it was all Federer. He converted on two of three break point attempts and won 92 percent of his first serves, plus 83 percent of his second serves. The second set was a big closer, with Federer winning just 59 percent of his second serves, and it’s the set that Cilic took in a tiebreak.

The third set didn’t see Federer improve his second serve percentage, but he did hit seven aces and eight winners, converting on one of two break points to snag it and force a fourth set. In the fourth, Federer started to make mistakes. He only managed to get 36 percent of his first serves in, and only won on 67 percent of those. He hit just six winners to Cilic’s 13.

Federer, the second seed, came into the Australian Open as one of the favorites, and searching for his 20th Grand Slam title. Most consider Federer to be the best in the world, but getting to No. 20 was important for him.

Watch his post match speech, too. It’s great.

Cilic came into the final having won just one Grand Slam before, at the US Open in 2014. This was the first time he played in the finals at Melbourne.

Going into the match, they had played each other nine times as professionals. Federer had won eight of those contests, most of them in straight sets. Cilic bested top seed Rafael Nadal and 10th seed Pablo Carreno Busta on his way to the finals. Federer downed No. 29 Richard Gasquet and 19th seed Tomas Berdych in his.

Federer now owns six Australian Open titles, including in back-to-back years. He’s won the title at the French Open once, the US Open five times and Wimbledon a whopping eight times. He is the fourth person — and first man — to win 20 grand slam titles.

Here is a funny GIF, enjoy!

In the women’s final, Caroline Wozniacki bested Simona Halep to win her first ever Grand Slam title, wrapping up that portion of the year’s first Major.
