It’s been more than 10 months since Ryan Shazier suffered a devastating spinal injury during a Monday Night Football game in December 2017. His path to recovery has been a long one, but Sunday the linebacker walked back on the field at Paul Brown Stadium for the first time since suffering his injury.

Before the Steelers’ game against the Bengals, Ryan Shazier visited the Cincinnati hospital that first cared for him after his injury.

Shazier, 26, has said that it’s his dream to play football again, but for now his recovery continues. The Steelers’ return to Cincinnati to play the Bengals gave Shazier the chance to visit the place where that recovery began: UC Health’s University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
“Coming back is kind of scary sometimes, so I’m actually happy to be here and see everyone’s face and I just want to let you guys know that I’m doing really well and I’m thankful,” Shazier told the UC Health staff.
Shazier spent two days hospitalized in Cincinnati in December before he traveled back to Pittsburgh for spinal stabilization surgery. Like every other step of his inspiring recovery, Shazier’s return to the place where he was injured has been another show on strength and courage.
