Michael Jordan has become the latest athlete to invest in esports after it was announced Thursday morning that the NBA Hall of Famer and owner of the Charlotte Hornets is investing in aXiomatic esports, along with investment group Declaration Capital.

aXiomatic is perhaps best known in esports circles for being the company that owns Team Liquid, a major organization in League of Legends, Dota 2 and numerous other games. aXiomatic co-executive chair Ted Leonsis, owner of the Washington Wizards said in a press release:

“Esports is the fastest-growing sector in sports and entertainment, and aXiomatic is at the forefront of that growth. We are thrilled to welcome Michael and Declaration Capital to aXiomatic and look forward to working together on some truly cutting-edge opportunities.”

aXiomatic was formed in 2015 as a partnership between several key investors spanning sports, entertainment, technology and investment. In 2016 the group acquired Team Liquid in one of the biggest esports-based acquisitions of the modern era, with the team having immediate success winning “The International” in Dota 2 in 2017 and winning the North American League of Legends Championship in Spring and Summer of 2018. Team Liequid established themselves as the best North American LoL team this year but couldn’t make it out of a difficult group in the World Championships.

Jordan explained his investment:

“I’m excited to expand my sports equity portfolio through my investment in aXiomatic. Esports is a fast-growing, international industry and I’m glad to partner with this great group of investors.”

The announcement marks a big week for esports with Drake and Scooter Braun investing in 100 Thieves earlier this week. Links between the NBA and esports are now stronger than every between numerous NBA owners now having stakes in organizations, paired with the ongoing NBA 2K League.
