RIP, the Nathan Peterman era

We really do hate to see you go.

The Buffalo Bills have released quarterback Nathan Peterman in what will go down as once of the worst quarterback careers in NFL history. This will leave the Bills with Josh Allen, Matt Barkley, and Derek Anderson at quarterback.

Peterman will finish his Bills career with three touchdowns and 12 interceptions on 130 career attempts, meaning he threw an interception on 9.2 percent of his passes. He also threw as many pick-sixes (three) as passing touchdowns.

Peterman’s passer rating sits at 32.5 — for reference an incomplete pass on every play nets you a passer rating of 39.6. He opened the season as the starter, but after a disastrous first half in their season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, the Bills inserted rookie Josh Allen into the lineup. Peterman was put back into the lineup after Allen suffered an elbow injury against the Houston Texans.

Peterman was mostly known for throwing five interceptions in his career debut against the Los Angeles Chargers — while the Bills were in the middle of a playoff race.

That was until the Bills signed Derek Anderson and Matt Barkley off the street. Anderson started two games before suffering a concussion against the Patriots.

Barkley was signed off the street two weeks ago and got the start in the Bills’ surprising 41-10 blowout win over the Jets in Week 10. With a 117.4 passer rating, two touchdowns, and no turnovers, Barkley played a better game than Peterman ever has.

With the Bills on a bye and Allen on the mend, it made sense for the Bills to make the move now, even if it was a little later than many expected.

Peterman was a driving force in the Bills having one of the worst offenses in the history of the NFL and contributed to their generally weird season.

Former Bills quarterback EJ Manuel called the team out for their hypocrisy about keeping Peterman on the team while he struggled and received the boot. Now Peterman joins Manuel on the free agent market.
