Imagine watching a division rival win a Super Bowl. Then imagine taking out a full-page newspaper ad to congratulate that rival’s quarterback. That’s exactly what Matthew McConaughey, a hardcore fan of Washington, did for Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.

McConaughey is a hardcore fan of Washington, so this is a particularly nice gesture.

Foles is an Austin, Texas native. McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas, and he lives in Austin now. That Texas pride apparently trumps any kind of NFC East bad blood. On Sunday, McConaughey sent Foles a little message by way of a full-page ad in the Austin American-Statesman.
McConaughey is a Texas Longhorns fan, too. So why not the Cowboys? He’s got plenty of extremely solid reasons.
“I grew up watching westerns with my father; I was always rooting for the Indians instead of the Cowboys,” McConaughey said in 2013, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “My favorite food was hamburgers growing up; they had a linebacker, no. 55, Chris Hanburger. And then John Riggins. When you’re 4 years old, that’s why you really commit to a team, for reasons like that. It goes way back.”
McConaughey signs off with “just keep livin,’” which is also the name of his foundation. McConaughey creates opportunities for fitness and wellness for high school kids with his charity. The line is also a nod to McConaughey’s classic role as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused.
That quote is alright, alright, alright. But it’d be a lot cooler if he did figure out how to work a “time is a flat circle” in there somewhere.
It’s a classy move from McConaughey, especially considering that Foles is on his favorite team’s division rival. And Foles appreciated the sentiment.
